Thomas Chambers (English-American, 1808-1869)

Flamboyant 19th century painter, Thomas Chambers spent time as a youth in England as a carriage painter. His “fancy” style as he himself referred to it, carried over beautifully into his fine art studio creations. Commonly referred to as “America’s First Modern”, Thomas Chambers’ paintings are highly distinct and immediately recognizable for their compositional integrity and consistency, their flattened and stylized forms, their believable skys and clouds, and the atmospheric effects surrounding them.

The name (HIS name) associated with his art was largely unknown until a rare, signed painting was discovered in the eary 1940s and shined a light on a tremendous body of highly unique artwork. His work is celebrated wildly among collectors of 19th century artwork including Early American, American, English, Marine, Primitive, Naive, Faux Naive, and Folk Art enthusiasts, amongst others.

His work is included in numerous public and private collections.
